January 1945. During the last winter of WWII, Nazi occupied Holland lies under a blanket of snow. Food is scarce with many people heading east in a desperate attempt to find sustenance. When Michiel (13) becomes involved in the Resistance, he learns that good and evil often sit side by side without anyone noticing. The story is based on the beautiful novel by Jan Terlouw and even more than 50 years later, the story lets us feel the the gruesome, but also adventurous aspect of growing up under the circumstances of war. Hugely successful in the Netherlands, the critically acclaimed WINTER IN WARTIME is the Dutch entry for the 2010 Academy Awards and is on the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist. Beautifully realised by director Martin Koolhoven, this is a film that takes a fresh look at Dutch resistance from the perspective of a 13 year old child.
